"Final Cut Pro for Avid Editors" Book Excerpt

Working with Tools and Audio Meters by Diana Weynand

You select Avid tools by using the keyboard, pressing command buttons, or selecting an option from the Fast menu. Final Cut Pro follows the design of certain desktop graphics programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) by placing editing tools in a Tool palette. This is like tearing off the Fast menu of functions in Avid. The FCP Tool palette provides a convenient way to select many editing operations. In addition, each of the four primary FCP interface windows has its own button bar that you can customize with your personal set of command buttons. When working within FCP, the default tool is the Selection tool, which is a black arrow. Its shortcut key is the letter A. You use this tool to select clips, transitions, and groups of clips; it's the tool you will work with most of the time. »   Read More

Thinking Different in Color by Steve Hullfish

For many, trying to use Apple Color seems a little daunting. It has the feel of UNIX and lots of controls that look and act differently than anything you've seen on a Mac, but the program is actually very easy to use. But even those who have spent quite a bit of time using Color may not have found the tip I'm about to reveal that is based on a technique I learned from Hollywood's top gun colorists. Let's take two shots that I'm trying to match in my timeline. It's a close up of a piano player shot with two different white balances. One is cool and the other is somewhere between balanced and slightly warm. If that terminology isn't working for you, then, one is bluish and one is slightly reddish yellow. Let's pretend that your client HAS to use these two shots cut directly one from the other, so they have to match.  Read More
