Editing in Full Screen View in iPhoto

by Tony Craig

Here are a few, very simple shortcut tips that can make editing in full screen view easier to access in iPhoto. It’s often the simple tips which you use all the time that make the difference!

Opening a Photo Automatically in Full Screen View

Often, it’s easier to edit a photo in full screen view rather than in the edit view window. You can set iPhoto’s Preferences to always edit a photo in full screen view, so that when you double click on a thumbnail, it automatically opens in that view.

Select iPhoto-Preferences-General from the main menu bar, then Select Double-click photo: Edits photo, and finally Select Edit photo: Using full screen.

To open a photo in the iPhoto main window instead of in full screen view when the option in iPhoto-Preferences-General is set to automatically open in full screen view, simply double-click on the thumbnail with the Option key held down. This reverses the selection in iPhoto’s Preferences.

Changing The Appearance of the Full Screen View

The iPhoto menu bar, thumbnail browser and toolbar are available in full screen view when editing photos. However, it is possible to change the appearance of the full screen view shown below and as you hide the iPhoto menu bar, thumbnail browser and toolbar, so the view of the photo increases in size in full screen view.

1. To hide iPhoto’s menu bar and browser at the top of the photograph, press Option-Command-T. This shortcut toggles between always showing and always hiding iPhoto’s menu bar and browser.

2. To always hide the toolbar at the bottom of the photograph as well, select View-Autohide Toolbar from iPhoto’s menu. To always show the toolbar, select View-Show Toolbar from iPhoto’s menu.

3. To show the iPhoto menu and browser temporarily when the Option-Command-T shortcut is in operation, simply move the cursor arrow to the top of the screen. The iPhoto menu and browser remain available while the cursor is within the iPhoto menu and browser area.

To turn on full screen view in edit view and the main window, press Option-Command-F. To open a thumbnail in full screen view, when the iPhoto-Preferences-General-Edit photo: In main window option has been selected, select the thumbnail and press Option-Command-F.

To turn off full screen view and exit to the thumbnail view, press either Esc, Return or double-click on the photo.
