#4 Sharing Your Sequence

New to Final Cut Pro 7 is an export function called Share. Gone are the days where you have to figure out your compression settings to export a sequence. One set of settings for your ipod, another for the web, another to create a DVD. Now, all you have to do is choose your destination and Final Cut Pro will determine the best settings for you! And the best news is that you don't have to export your sequence one file at a time. List all of your export destinations and Final Cut Pro will export them all together––and allow you to continue editing at the same time! Let's take a closer look.

Share Output Options

To select the Share option, choose File > Export > Share, or press Shift–Command–E. The Share dialog appears. First choose your destination for the files you'll be exporting.

Next, click the Output Type popup menu. Each of these options is a preset destination or target for your sequence.

You may want to export your sequence to view on Apple TV, on an iPhone, iPod, post it to YouTube, or burn a DVD Or Blu-ray disc. I'll take a closer look at the Blu-ray options in my #3 feature. For now, simply choose the first destination from the popup menu. Let's say it's Apple TV. When this option is chosen, you can select the Add to iTunes Library checkbox.

An action drawer appears in which you can also choose a particular iTunes playlist. After the file is exported, Final Cut Pro will automatically deliver this file to iTunes for easy access and viewing, as well as syncing to Apple TV.

Adding Additional Export Destinations

Once you've set up one destination, you can choose another, then another. Simply click the Add Output button (plus sign) and another output target appears. Again, just choose the destination from the Output Type popup menu.

For every format in the Share window, Final Cut Pro can perform an additional action to deliver the exported file (s) to the final destination. Some outputs can go to iTunes, while others, such as YouTube, will actually post a movie directly to YouTube. Choose YouTube from the Output Type popup. Then select the Publish to YouTube checkbox

In the YouTube action drawer, just enter your username and password, along with the movie title and other information–such as description, tags, and category–to post it directly.

Sending to Compressor

You can also access all of the customized export settings you may have created from within Compressor as well as the default settings from that application. Or you can send a sequence to Compressor directly from the Share dialog.
