USING MARKERS TO CREATE SUBCLIPS?

If you’ve ever worked with subclips, you know how they can streamline your editing process. Mark an In and an Out in a longer clip, make a subclip of this portion, and you've create a clip you can rename and use independently. But did you know that subclips can also be created from markers? Combining a few functions can save hours of time during the capturing and organizing process.

PROBLEM

Let’s say you’ve shot some DV or DVCPRO footage and want to capture an entire tape. Do you mark each portion you want to capture? You could. But that would take a lot of time, not to mention starting and stopping your master tape several times.

SOLUTION

Capture the entire tape using the Capture Now option. Let Final Cut Pro place markers where the tape stopped and started. Then convert those markers into subclips.

1 Capture the full length of the tape, using the Capture Now option. Open the clip into the Viewer. Choose Mark > DV Start/Stop Detect. Markers are placed wherever there was a break in the tape.

2 In the Browser, click the disclosure triangle next to the captured clip with markers. Press Cmd-B to create a new bin.

3 Drag the markers into the new bin. Subclips are created from one marker to the next marker.
